10 Easy Steps You Need to Know Before Buying a Diamond!
Isn’t every month diamond-buying month? Around Lewis Jewelers it is! We have to say October is a special month and home to our ULTIMATE DIAMOND EVENT. It’s easy to fall in love with diamonds, but there are things you should know before you make that decision to buy. Because, just like no two diamonds are alike, (literally no two are the same!) no two buying experiences will generally be the same. A diamond is a meaningful purchase and you might need some help navigating those waters. Luckily you came to the right place!
Understand the 4 C’s
You don’t need to be a Gemologist to have a basic understanding or for you understand the differences and quite frankly how this affects the price of a diamond. In a nutshell;
Carat Weight: This is totally about the size of the diamond, but it does have to be balanced with other factors. A well-cut diamond can appear larger and also more brilliant.
Cut: To us, this is probably the most important of the 4 C’s. It affects the sparkle without a doubt and so you want to opt for a high-quality cut. Rest assured, this will change the visual appeal!
Color: This is where it can get a little confusing. Diamonds are graded by professional laboratories (GIA being one of the most credentialed and considered a leading authority). They go from colorless (D) being the most white and valuable to light yellow or brown (Z). You will not find those lower color grade diamonds at Lewis Jewelers!
Clarity: This generally assesses inclusions or flaws within a diamond. The fewer the flaws typically means the higher the quality. All affecting the price.
Complicated? A little. But that’s why you work with a reputable jeweler who can explain and show your diamond through a high intense magnifier or loop!
Set a Budget
You have one. And you should be prepared to share that with your jeweler. However, this is where we can help you prioritize what matters to you most and find the diamond of your dreams. Never be nervous to discuss this. Ever!
All Shapes
Diamonds come in various shapes and allure! Select one that speaks to your style and taste. There’s no wrong way to go.
Understand Fluorescence
Here’s one you may not be familiar with. Diamond fluorescence may affect a diamonds appearance under UV light. Decide if you like minimal fluorescence or if you feel that it adds character to your diamond. The point being, ask about it!
Education
Work with a retailer who is well-educated; has certifications; has vast experience, and who can help lead you through the maze of buying a diamond!
Market Trends
Stay in the know and do a little research on trends. Not because you have to follow them, just understand that some trends can impact price. When Princess Diana received a stunning Blue Sapphire engagement ring, there was a run on Blue Sapphires. The more popular, the harder to come by, and that can generally increase a price.
Compare Prices
Generally a jeweler would not tell you to do this, but we will! Because there is so much misinformation out there, as an example, many feel online retailers are without a doubt the lowest price. We can unequivocally tell you that is not necessarily the truth. In fact, there are many times, the quality of the diamond is not equal to what you’re paying for.
Check Online Reviews
Read some of those reviews! You will be hearing from actual customers who will have valuable insights into their experiences. Google, Facebook are all great places to start.
Ask for Recommendations
If you know someone who has had a great experience or recently purchased a diamond, then ask! They are a valuable source and wealth of information!
Trust Your Instincts
Last but not least, trust your own instincts. A diamond needs to speak to you. Not literally, but it needs to speak to you emotionally. Because it’s that important. Whether you are celebrating an anniversary, a personal achievement, or it’s your time to get engaged! Chose a diamond that will hold meaning in your life and one that is uniquely you!
